Basic overview of decorative trim/moldings we install and repair

Chair rails originated in dining rooms to prevent chairs from touching and damaging wall paint and wallpaper. They have evolved into decorative elements which offer spaces above and below for two colors of paint or paint on one section and wallpaper or stenciling on the other. The height is generally between a third and halfway up the wall, and it’s found now in any room for its appearance and versatility in an overall color scheme.

Crown molding is placed high, like a crown, adjacent to the ceiling. It first was used to hide cracks and imperfections, but now embraces an ornamental purpose. Depending on the thickness and design in the molding, it can add a elegant feature to an otherwise plain room. Whatever the molding design, it adds a finished look.

Baseboards are akin to crown molding for softening the contact of wall and flooring, as well as protecting those low adjacent spaces from ragged endings where dirt can accumulate. Coffered ceilings are very fine architectural elements that give a 3-dimensional component in squares, rectangles or octagons in a ceiling. The word “coffer” means indentation, and coffered – or trey or tray or recessed - ceilings evoke luxury and may camouflage imperfections while creating a sense of additional height.
