A mullion is that bar which separates window panes vertically. It provides a strong reinforcement piece for the glass primarily, but may also lend structural support to the arch or lintel above the window. In general, a horizontal piece between glass panes is a transom or head jamb, and can be called a horizontal mullion for clarity. Some mullions, vertical or horizontal, are purely decorative and placed inside on the glass for the appearance of window panes.
