The advantages of wallpaper start with the almost unlimited styles, colors, shapes, prints and themes. Even if the upfront cost is a tad on the high side, today’s wallpapers can look as rich and perform as functional for 15 years or more. In this common space hallway, we removed some very old damaged wallpaper and applied and smoothed new plaster for a charming, neutral, chevron print.

We painted the ceiling, then brushed satin imprevo on the trim in Linen White. This premium, low luster product is formulated for excellence in leveling and concealing any small imperfections on the molding itself. Once all that was dry, we set up large table spaces for unrolling, cutting, pasting and preparing each wallpaper piece for precise application on the wall, making sure the designs matched at every seam. Hanging wallpapering is the perfect task for being fussy and finicky, and everyone on our team is just that on projects like this. We helped coordinate the front-end paperwork required by the building’s board and management to make the interior changes. Then we rolled in to remove wallpaper and old glue, expertly clean the walls and completely refresh the space. Now, it’s tricky to know if it’s going to be more energizing to step outside here onto a lovely, protected patio space or to step back inside on these handsome parquet floors among smooth, clean, freshly painted walls. You never know what floats someone’s boat, and this wild, geometric, wallpaper scheme was no longer welcome in this hall or bathroom. Work in the building had been in a long pause for covid, and our client was past ready for a fresh start on all fronts. We were only too happy ourselves to rid the spaces of wallpaper that makes your eyes waver. Then there’s always cleaning off glue and paper residue and smoothing the walls for something chic and uptown with Farrow & Ball fine paint products.

 The hall is now Pavilion Gray, a classic middle shade reminiscent of an elegant 18th century Swedish neutral color. The bathroom walls and ceiling deliver a real wow factor for the deep, dark, midnight blue of Hague Blue. According to Farrow-ball.com, it is named for colored woodwork popular with the Dutch people. Both paint colors evoke strength and power with undertones of stability and balance, so they are excellent choices for the luxury lifestyle at 70 Washington Street in DUMBO.

There are many factors which keep employee morale high, and a clean, well-organized, aesthetically-pleasing interior environment is an important one. When Hugh O’Kane Electric Company chose a new site in Long Island City for its trucks and operations, the electrical and telecommunications firm called us to renovate some of the space. The company is an industry leader in electrical contracting services and state-of-the-art infrastructure. Across more than 70 years, Hugh O’Kane Electric has kept much of the Big Apple wired. And we at Paintworks keep lots of places in New York City freshly painted and aesthetically-pleasing.

Here we protected the floor and set about to remove wallpaper and the old glue that sticks, well, like glue. It takes a diligent approach with the correct products to get that stuff off. Then we cleaned the walls, as well as disinfected and killed some mold and bacteria. After we painted everything, the staff at this new location could settle into a comfortable, super clean space to equip and dispatch trucks, manage operations and keep much of our lives wired.

Sometimes a room needs a refresher, even an alluring one with a bay window and corner cabinet. This space had trim on the wall about a foot below the ceiling with wallpaper from the floor to that point more than half a century old. This was an exceptionally dated space loaded with charm and potential. Stripping wallpaper is much more complicated than it looks, especially older products which have become brittle and have decades-old glue underneath.

Even when the wallpaper was all removed, we were facing uneven, damaged drywall. A great option is to skim coat the walls to give them an evenly smooth texture, and that’s exactly what we did. The room’s character and charm were restored and the walls totally smoothed and freshened. Time for tea anyone?
