Despite our best efforts, we do judge a book by its cover, people by their attire and a house by its appearance. Like it or not, first impressions set the stage for everything that follows. Curb appeal can be a deal breaker for selling, and houses with an attractive look sell for higher prices in less time than those with a bit of sloppy in place. However, home maintenance is not always about selling the property. Homeowners should keep up the exterior for themselves to enjoy. Additionally, a house usually represents one’s largest asset, and savvy homeowners get the most from it while they live in it plus if they sell it.

So, we cruised on into Yonkers, the third largest city in the entire state of New York, to paint this house, which is much larger than the straight-on street view. Two windows had leaks, so we fixed those and scraped away loose old paint in other places. The dark gray offers a classy contrast to the white trim, and there’s a psychology to color which carries emotion. Dark gray offers diplomacy, balance and neutral traits, and the long-time homeowner here heartily embraced the change.

John Street runs from FDR Drive and the East River near the historic waterfront district to Water Street a block from the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. John Street Church, founded in 1766, is the oldest continuous Methodist congregation in the country. Financial district offices share this historical slice of the Big Apple with eateries, cool condos and a variety of businesses. The family leaving Brooklyn behind and relocating into the Financial District, affectionally dubbed FiDi, wanted everything in their new home to be fresh and beautiful.

There are rules and regulations for painting in many Manhattan buildings, and we are familiar with all of it, organizing paperwork, sharing our business license and qualifications as required. When we secure all the approval necessary, we get the key and tote in our drop cloths, tape and protective gear, paint, brushes, rollers, ladders, scaffolding, a few of those wood stick stirrers and do what we do best --- paint. Paper Mill Playhouse, the State Theatre of New Jersey, was established in 1938 in the township of  Millburn. Mustard, which has been around for thousands of years, is one of the all-time great condiments for hotdogs and ham sandwiches. But living among mustard-colored walls did not suit this Millburn homeowner’s idea of desirable room paint. While colors move in and out of favor and trend, the neutral palette never goes out of style. And the achromatic color of gray, in the space between white and black, carries many connotations and a lot of power. 

Gray exudes modesty, safety and reliability. There’s an emotional tone of maturity – think gray hair, of course – and dignity. With exquisite white trim like in this room, the contrast offers elegance and grace. As a relaxed color with a subtle hint of pewter and silver, it automatically exhibits a sophisticated soothing ambience.

Protecting the floor was job one, and covering the dull venetian gold with this feathery shade of gray made the job fun and exciting. One of the great benefits of being painters is experiencing the mood and ambiance transformations in a space as the job unfolds. Besides holding to the highest standards for painting and renovation work, our team is sensitive to the vibes of a newly painted room. The Upper East Side exudes elegance, and one couple craved a new, more refined style in their living room. With its unique ceiling trim and high shelf, beams, charming bay window and warm wood floors, the space was perfect for Behr's Orion Gray in soft matte. Residential Cabinet Spraying, Long Island, NY

The nicest family with great kids, a rambunctious dog and a gorgeous kitchen in need of updating before the holidays reached out for cabinet resurfacing, and we were excited to be part of the plan. From old dull brown to exciting fresh White Dove by Benjamin Moore, the Paintworks crew expertly removed the cupboard doors and drawers to spray off-site at our own special shop space designed for these projects. This soft white paint with a hint of gray is extremely popular, especially for kitchens, and the choice of satin texture offers a slight sheen that is easy to clean. Certainly their extended family and friends will be wowed by this new, very light, very bright heart of the home.
