Manhattan Townhouse Plaster Restoration 

Coffered ceilings are an elegant architectural feature which have stood the test of time. They may have originally been designed as a more lightweight option to stone, while evoking a measure of formality. Some speculate they also hide ceiling imperfections while adding perceived height and drama overhead. They are indeed beautiful. When water damaged the stunning ceiling in this Manhattan townhouse, we came in to remove the old plaster, clean, scrape and prep for a new surface.

Not only did we patch and paint the ceiling, but also we recreated some of the molding in our shop. It’s intricate work crafting the wood for the coffered effect, even before transporting, installing, priming and painting it. There’s a great deal of satisfaction at the end of the project like this, and the outcome was an historic plaster ceiling restored to its former glory.

More than two centuries ago, Rose Hill was a farm on the banks of the East River with 260 apple trees and 9,000 young fruit trees. The owners had a thriving nursery across 92 acres when it was listed for sale in 1790. Today, the neighborhood boasts world-class dining, museums, architecture, entertainment and homes. Reluctantly, they completely repaired and painted the walls with no more hint of a budding Van Gogh or Wyeth as a previous young resident. Wickham Gray is a reliable neutral, along with timeless Chantilly Lace white on ceilings, trim and doors. Both provide the perfect color complement with hardwood floors and perhaps a new canvas for another youngster with an artistic bent.

It is well-known that water and oil don’t mix, and equally as recognized that water and drywall are not good companions. The former really messes up the latter, causing peeling, blistering, discoloration and potential material deterioration. This client’s living room plaster had been damaged by water from above. We have a real experienced been-there-done-that crew when it comes to water damage in or not in an historic building. This was inside a gracefully renovated historic structure, and we set to work scraping and evaluating the tasks at hand.

Once all the peeling paint was removed, we plastered it, let it dry, smoothed it, plastered again as needed, dried and smoothed and primed and painted. It’s a multi-step process not to be rushed. In the end, we loved the color itself as much as the name of the color: Fire Dance by Benjamin Moore, an extraordinarily bold color which enriches this space immensely. The client now returns home to a beautiful living room in which to relax, entertain and enjoy.

Yorkville Painters

 The Yorkville neighborhood of Manhattan hugs the East River on the east and rests an easy couple blocks walking to Park Avenue. Gracie Mansion, the official home of the mayor, is in Yorkville, along with Carl Schurz Park and the 92nd Street Y. Papaya King, which opened in 1932, is still serving up grilled hot dogs and tropical drinks. High-rise condo buildings offer classy, contemporary cribs, and we recently painted one of these.

 A coat of paint does wonders for any interior space (or exterior), and savvy property managers and homeowners who rent out their properties know this well. Thus, we waltzed into one of these Upper East Side condos in between tenants to spruce up the walls. The paint choice was Pink Damask OC-72 from Benjamin Moore’s Off-White Color collection. These walls will wow any prospective tenant for their light, neutral, quietly sophisticated allure. It’s the perfect, serene background for any style of art, décor, fabrics and furnishings.

John Street runs from FDR Drive and the East River near the historic waterfront district to Water Street a block from the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. John Street Church, founded in 1766, is the oldest continuous Methodist congregation in the country. Financial district offices share this historical slice of the Big Apple with eateries, cool condos and a variety of businesses. The family leaving Brooklyn behind and relocating into the Financial District, affectionally dubbed FiDi, wanted everything in their new home to be fresh and beautiful.

When we secure all the approval necessary, we get the key and tote in our drop cloths, tape and protective gear, paint, brushes, rollers, ladders, scaffolding, a few of those wood stick stirrers and do what we do best --- paint.
