The Craft Studio has a presence in the Upper East Side and in Tribeca for classes and parties. Its mission is “to provide a fun, safe and welcoming environment where kids and adults are free to be creative! We put our heart and soul into making sure each customer has a unique, individualized and magical experience.” And to assist with this, we were contacted to create an ombre painted wall in one of the party spaces.

Ombré may sound a little Spanish because the pronunciation is the same as “hombre” which is Spanish for man. But, actually, ombré in the world of color is from French for “shaded”. And a quick search uncovers many more references to ombré hair than walls. But here we carefully applied four colors in seven color stages from dark to light, top to bottom: crocus petal purple, amethyst cream, lily lavender, misty lilac. It’s a beautiful wall and enhances the fun, upbeat, party atmosphere immensely.

Besides being hot to the taste buds, chili peppers are visually delightful for their bold red color. In fact, Pantone, the world’s foremost authority on color, selected “chili pepper” for its Color of the Year in 2007. Long associated with exotic foods and cultural distinction, this dramatic dark red exudes energy, passion and strength. On one recent fun job where the client ordered up a super cool wall of horizontal stripes in the red, orange and yellow spectrum, we painted the 2nd floor air duct to match the chili pepper stripes.

Electrical and HVAC technicians most often have to go through walls to get their work done. And if had we a dime for every hole-in-the-wall we’ve plastered up, smoothed over, primed and painted, we’d be sipping margaritas under a palm tree somewhere. Projects like this get our own creative juices flowing, and when done, well, we all want to go home and paint something this exciting for ourselves.

We were contacted by an innovative homeowner who wanted to make his newly purchased apartment uniquely his own before moving in. His vision included the warm look of multi-grain wood and walls with a French Wash. Our Paintworks team installed the new floor and added a modern, flat profile baseboard finished with quarter-round shoe molding.

Walls are the largest expanse in any room, and here we used Benjamin Moore’s Nickel as the base coat and the company’s Smoke Gray for the top coat. The French Wash effect adds texture and depth with a soft marbleized appearance. To achieve this novel result, we used a large swath of muslin cloth working non-stop as the Smoke Gray paint was applied in random brush strokes followed by patting the wall quickly and expertly with the fabric. The outcome is a stunning, deep pewter, contemporary interior with an industrial flair where the homeowner can proudly host friends and relax himself.

New York City is a mecca for style and fashion. The unique style of the city is not limited to just garments and art but also goes for home decorating. There are endless options when painting the interior of a home. With an NYC apartment don't let the size of the space limit the possibilities of the look and feel you can achieve through painting. One way to add a unique touch to a wall is to add decorative stripes. We're not talking about cheesy looking candy cane stripes but professional beautiful stripes that give a feel of elegance. When looking for a spark for their entryway, this homeowner chose beautiful metallic pearl vertical stripes. Unless you're an abstract artist, even spacing and even stripe width have the most importance when painting vertical lines on a wall. The striped walls now make anyone walking through the front door feel like they're walking into a high end 5th avenue store!
