Imagine you are moving. Soon. You are excited. You have chosen your new Big Apple abode with care to meet your location preferences, lifestyle and budget. Your other lease is over, your stuff is packed in boxes, furniture and electronics are ready to relocate. Then you receive a phone call, not from Chicken Little telling you the sky is falling, but from another source telling you the ceiling has fallen. There was a flood in the residence above which ruined the entire ceiling in one large room, leaving ceiling pieces, insulation and all manner of debris on the floor of your new place. And no real ceiling above.

The best plan is to call us at Paintworks and go find an extra large latte, or a big martini, and give us the weekend to fix it all. We did it - for an early-next-week move-in! Our skilled tradesmen removed all the ceiling pieces which had not fallen on their own, then determined what was needed for new framing, insulation and drywall. Ceiling work is quite challenging and requires the same attention to measurements and installation procedures as walls and floors, but it will test one’s biceps strength and blood pressure to the max, working upside down much of the time. Then there’s cutting out precise spaces for recessed lights and ceiling speakers.

For a smooth finish [pun intended], we taped, plastered and primed the new drywall, covering the new insulation, connected to the new framework. Then, we painted it bright white for maximum natural daylight reflection and packed up our floor coverings, brushes, rollers, tools and equipment. We like to think the next call to the new tenant was the happy news that the ceiling was repaired over the weekend. It was again stable and secure, and the time to move in is now.

Whether you are popping into Target for socks or Walgreens for shampoo, when you’re on East 86th Street, for sure carve out time for Shake Shack. With humble beginnings of a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park, the company has expanded worldwide to 436 locations, six of them in the Big Apple. This Upper East Side street has its own non-profit association “to improve the quality of life along the East 86th Street corridor.” There’s lots going on here, and we worked all around the business schedule and daily urban action in and around Shake Shack.

We were honestly honored to get called in to paint yet another Shake Shack without sacrificing one shake order – or one shackburger order, for which it’s also very well-known. Our project was to prime and paint all the woodwork, plus plaster and paint the ceiling. Obviously, protecting e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. inside the eatery was imperative, so that was task one. Once things were sufficiently covered, our team set to work and worked all night, beginning at 11 p.m., when many Shake Shack customers were snuggling in for the night.

The restaurant opened on time at 10 a.m., and many well-rested regulars strolled in for frozen custard, fresh lemonade, a shake, some fries and maybe their awesome sweet-n-salty peanut butter and bacon shackburger, oh my! We actually did this two nights in a row to finish the project, freshen the restaurant and provide our excellent services, which we do often in the night for retail businesses. We love all our commercial clients and willingly do our work around their work, so everyone gets to work, on time.

Wall Street was named in 1711 for a long-gone wall built by Dutch settlers to keep out the pirates and the Brits. Though it is only six blocks long, the surrounding streets house some of the largest, most reputable financial entities in the world. Broad Street runs between Wall St. and Exchange Place. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) was constituted in 1817. Fast forward 204 years, and the new owners of a beautiful condo across the street from NYSE wanted to brighten their interior walls. We love the vitality and pizzazz found in this part of Manhattan and eagerly loaded up our floor protection materials, paint, tape, brushes, scrapers, rollers, ladders and all we would need for the project.

You might read that “kids say the darndest things,” but hey, adults “do the darndest things.” In this delightful condo, someone had wallpapered the ceilings. We set about removing that, which is easier said than done, working kind of upside down, peeling, scraping, sanding and smoothing prior to priming and painting. The walls have been transformed from dark and dull to bright and beautiful with the popular White Dove paint selection. And the new owners are happy in their pleasant, newly painted home.

Touching up paint is one of those ideas that looks good on paper and never looks good on the walls or ceiling. The splotchy ceiling and dull walls were an eyesore to a Midtown Manhattan couple who wanted their new condo to be fresh and clean before they moved in. One of the most popular paints on the market is Benjamin Moore’s White Dove, and here the classic, soft shade proved perfect for the trim. The walls are Pale Oak, a greige color. Greige is a fairly new word that crosses gray and beige for a warm taupe. Their choice of this neutral palette is brilliant for showcasing artwork, fabric and upholstery, bold splashes of color or subtle hints of earth tones and pastels.
